Samarkanda | Silk with metal ring

Samarkand is a city in present day Uzbekistan, and lies on the famous Silk Road trade route linking Venice and China. It has a helmet-like structure, with spirals topped by an ornamental disc. The disc is decorated with patterns suggesting a rose window in a Gothic cathedral.
The metal ring adds an interesting contrast of delicacy and strength.
